Full Year Course; 120 minutes
The chemistry course by Apologia is designed to prepare high school students for college chemistry. The 16 modules cover measurement and units, atoms and molecules, classifying matter and its changes, chemical equations, atomic and molecular structure, polyatomic ions, molecular geometry, acids and bases, solutions, gas phase, kinetics, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, energy and heat, and reduction-oxidation reactions. The text is well-written in a conversational tone and is easy to understand. The class is conducted in a lecture format with some instructional demonstrations performed by the teacher. Students will also perform some experiments themselves and will be required to keep a lab notebook to record their lab experiences. Tests are given at the end of each module. Students must have completed Algebra 1.
- Due to the significant amount of math in this course, all students must have passed Algebra 1 with an 85% or higher. Students wishing to take this class who have not competed Algebra 1 with an 85% or higher should contact the instructor to discuss options prior to registration.
- Students must complete and submit a Chemistry Skills Assessment (click here) prior to 31 July.
- Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd Edition; Apologia ISBN 978 1932012293. This is a textbook and test / solutions manual.
- Before purchasing the text, parents may contact the instructor at firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire about borrowing a text as she has several available to lend.
