Intermediate English

Full Year Class; 90 minutes

Students will learn the fundamentals of the English language and literature. Students will also grow in their appreciation for a variety of forms of literary works, including short stories, poetry, essays, dramas, and novels. Additionally, they will examine and practice the modes of writing, e.g., narration, description, exposition, and persuasion, in composing paragraphs, essays, and stories. Students will be assigned a minimum of 3 formal writing assignments during the year. Instruction in vocabulary development and grammar will support the students’ writing.

Students are encouraged to take this intermediate English course for two years in sequence. The literature selections are rotated so that specific material is new each year. Taking this English class twice during the intermediate years provides students with much-needed practice in writing well and with exposure to and review of literary concepts and terms, as well as grammar and usage.

Note: This course is designed for 7th, 8th, and some 9th grade students. Priority will be given to 8th-grade students.
